John SUMMERFIELD (London 1785ca - 1817ca) He was one of Francesco Bartolozzi's favorite pupils, he produced few etchings but of excellent quality. "Rubens and his Wife" Original etching and punctuated by a subject by Rubens and Snyders printed and published by Summerfield himself in London in 1801. Fine copy in first edition, the others were made in 1805 and 1814, on paper wire rod bearing a literal watermark, trimmed to the impression of the slab with some loss of the same, in particular at the top left corner, with various small defects at the edges and traces of old gluing on the verso, but overall, also given the considerable rarity , in good general condition. Andrew Tuer in his study on the life and works of Bartolozzi, in the chapter dedicated to the "Pupils" recalls that for the realization of this table Summerfield was awarded the gold medal of the Society of Art in London. Slater Bibliography “Engravings and their value” London 1912 p. 627/28. Tuer "Bartolozzi and his Works" London 1881 vol.2 pag.68. Measurements in mm: 570 x 491 (the sheet)
